This page follows from the Occupations section of this report and provides more detail on graduates’ occupations further categorised economic sector.

The chart which follows provides a breakdown of each occupation by economic sector.  Readers can filter to select a single Occupation of interest, and then by Programme Type, Field of Study, and year.

Some overall key findings, for all fields of study, all programme types, and all years are as follows:

  • It has already been noted that the majority of graduates work in Professional Occupations.  These graduates work across a wide range of sectors of the economy. The most common of these were Education (20%), Human Health and Social Work Activities (20%), Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (13%), Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (12%) and Industry (11%).
  • The second most common occupation for graduates was Associate Professional and Technical Occupations: Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (21%), Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (17%) and Industry (16%) were the most common sectors of employment.
  • Those working as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials were dispersed across a wide distribution of sectors in the economy. The most common sectors were Industry (15%), Other (10%), Financial, Insurance and Real Estate (9%), Human Health and Social Work Activities (9%), Information and Communication (9%), and Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (9%).
  • For Administrative and Secretarial Occupations, the most common sectors of employment were Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (21%) and Public Administration and Defence (20%).
  • For Caring, Leisure and other Service Occupations the most common sectors of employment were Human Health and Social Work Activities (30%), Education (25%) and Other (24%).
  • A total of 40% of graduates in Elementary Occupations were working in Accommodation and Food Service Activities.  This was followed by 15% in Other.
  • Postdoctoral Researchers were working mainly in the Education sector (62%) followed by Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (23%).

Honours Degree Graduates

  • The majority of honours degree graduates work in Professional Occupations (51%).  These graduates work across a wide range of sectors of the economy. The most common of these were Human Health and Social Work Activities (23%), Education (16%),  Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (14%), Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (13%), and Industry (11%).
  • The second most common occupation for graduates was Associate Professional and Technical Occupations: Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (24%), Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (18%) and Industry (15%) were the most common sectors of employment.
  • Those working as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials were dispersed across a wide distribution of sectors in the economy. The most common sectors were Industry (13%), Other (12%), Wholesale and Retail Trade (10%), and Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (7%).
  • For Administrative and Secretarial Occupations, the most common sectors of employment were Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (27%) and Administrative and Support Service Activities (10%).
  • For Caring, Leisure and other Service Occupations the most common sectors of employment were Human Health and Social Work Activities (29%), Education (29%) and Other (26%).
  • A total of 44% of graduates in Elementary Occupations were working in Accommodation and Food Service Activities.  This was followed by 15% in Other.
  • Postdoctoral Researchers were working mainly in the Education sector (28%) followed by Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (21%).

Postgraduate Degree Graduates

  • The majority of postgraduate degree graduates work in Professional Occupations (60%).  These graduates work across a wide range of sectors of the economy. The most common of these were Education (24%), Human Health and Social Work Activities (15%), Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (14%), Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (12%), and Industry (11%).
  • The second most common occupation for graduates was Associate Professional and Technical Occupations, with 12% of all graduates working in this occupation.  Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (22%), Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (16%) and Industry (13%) were the most common sectors of employment.
  • Those working as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials were dispersed across a wide distribution of sectors in the economy, and overall comprise 9% of all postgraduate degree graduate occupations. The most common sectors were Industry (16%), Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (11%), and Information and Communication (12%).
  • For Administrative and Secretarial Occupations, the most common sector of employment was Public Administration and Defence (20%).
  • For Caring, Leisure and other Service Occupations the most common sectors of employment were Human Health and Social Work Activities (42%), Other (20%) and Education (15%).
  • A total of 39% of graduates in Elementary Occupations were working in Accommodation and Food Service Activities.  This was followed by 15% in Other.
  • Postdoctoral Researchers were working mainly in the Education sector (66%) followed by Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (23%).
