This page follows from the Sectors section of this report and provides more detail on graduates’ economic sectors of employment further categorised occupation type.

The chart which follows provides a breakdown of each economic sector by occupation type.  Readers can filter to select a single sector of interest, and then by field of study, programme type and year.

 

Some overall key findings, for all fields of study, all programme types, and all years are as follows:

  • For the Construction sector of the economy, 54% of graduates were employed in Professional Occupations, 14% were employed in Skilled Trades Occupations, 12% were employed in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations, and 9% were working as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials.
  • For those graduates employed in the Education sector of the economy, 75% of graduates were employed in Professional Occupations with a further 8% employed in Caring, Leisure and Other Service Occupations.
  • For those employed in the Financial, Insurance and Real Estate sector, 54% were employed in Professional Occupations, 23% were employed in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations and 11% were employed in Administrative and Secretarial Occupations.
  • For the Human Health and Social Work Activities sector, 73% of graduates were employed in Professional Occupations, with a further 10% employed in Caring, Leisure and Other Service Occupations, and 6% in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations.
  • 51% of those employed in Industry were working in Professional Occupations, followed by 19% in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations, and 8% as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials.
  • For those employed in the Information and Communication sector, 51% were employed in Professional Occupations, with a further 26% employed in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations, 8% as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials, and 7% in Sales and Customer Service Occupations.
  • For those graduates employed in Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities sector, 62% were employed in Professional Occupations, 21% were in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations and 5% were working as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials.
  • 54% of those employed in the Wholesale and Retail Trade sector of the economy reported their occupations as Sales and Customer Service, followed by 15% in Professional Occupations, 9% as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials, and 7% were in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations.
  • The Accommodation and Food Services sector of the economy sees a significant range in the types of occupations graduates can work in.  The most common category is Elementary Occupations (21%), followed by Sales and Customer Service Occupations (19%), Skilled Trades Occupations (17%), Managers, Directors and Senior Officials (10%), Professional Occupations (9%), Caring, Leisure and Other Service Occupations (8%) and Administrative and Secretarial Occupations (7%).

Honours Degree Graduates

  • For the Construction sector of the economy, 55% of graduates were employed in Professional Occupations, 14% were employed in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations, 13% were employed in Skilled Trades Occupations and 6% were working as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials.
  • For those graduates employed in the Education sector of the economy, 72% of graduates were employed in Professional Occupations with a further 13% employed in Caring, Leisure and Other Service Occupations and 4% in Administrative and Secretarial Occupations.
  • For those employed in the Financial, Insurance and Real Estate sector, 52% were employed in Professional Occupations, 26% were employed in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations and 14% were employed in Administrative and Secretarial Occupations.
  • For the Human Health and Social Work Activities sector, 76% of graduates were employed in Professional Occupations, with a further 10% employed in Caring, Leisure and Other Service Occupations, and 6% in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations.
  • 50% of those employed in Industry were working in Professional Occupations, followed by 21% in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations, and 7% in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations.
  • 51% of those employed in the Information and Communication sector, 49% were employed in Professional Occupations, with a further 31% employed in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations, and 8% in Sales and Customer Service Occupations.
  • For those graduates employed in Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities sector, 62% were employed in Professional Occupations, 25% were in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations.
  • 63% of those employed in the Wholesale and Retail Trade sector of the economy reported their occupations as Sales and Customer Service, followed by 11% in Professional Occupations, 6% as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials, and 6% were in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations.

Postgraduate Degree Graduates

  • For the Construction sector of the economy, 62% of graduates were employed in Professional Occupations, 15% were working as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials, 9% were employed in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations, and 6% were employed in Skilled Trades Occupations.
  • For those graduates employed in the Education sector of the economy, 77% of graduates were employed in Professional Occupations with a further 7% employed as Postdoctoral Researchers.
  • For those employed in the Financial, Insurance and Real Estate sector,60% were employed in Professional Occupations, 21% were employed in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations and 8% were employed as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials.
  • For the Human Health and Social Work Activities sector, 74% of graduates were employed in Professional Occupations, with a further 7% employed in Caring, Leisure and Other Service Occupations and as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials, and 6% in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations.
  • 61% of those employed in Industry were working in Professional Occupations, followed by 15% in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations, and 13% as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials.
  • For those employed in the Information and Communication sector, 58% were employed in Professional Occupations, with a further 20% employed in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations, 11% as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials, and 5% in Sales and Customer Service Occupations.
  • For those graduates employed in Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities sector, 67% were employed in Professional Occupations, 16% were in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations and 7% were working as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials.
  • 37% of those employed in the Wholesale and Retail Trade sector of the economy reported their occupations as Sales and Customer Service, followed by 29% in Professional Occupations, 13% as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials, and 11% were in Associate Professional and Technical Occupations.
  • The Accommodation and Food Services sector of the economy sees a significant range in the types of occupations graduates can work in.  The most common categories are  Professional Occupations and Sales and Customer Service Occupations (both 17%), Elementary Occupations (16%), followed by Managers, Directors and Senior Officials (15%), and Skilled Trades Occupations (11%),

 

Field of Study

We consider different fields of study in more detail here.

For Arts and Humanities and Services graduates, there is a significant variation in the occupations held by graduates.

  • The Sectors section of this report notes that for Arts and Humanities graduates, the largest group selected Education (18%) followed by Other (15%), Information and Communication (13%) and Wholesale and Retail Trade (11%).
  • Overal,l Professional Occupations was the largest single occupation for Arts and Humanities graduates, followed by Associate Professional and Technical.

For Business, Administration and Law graduates, those in Professional Occupations tend to make up the single largest share of each economic sector, followed by Administrative and Secretarial OccupationsAssociate Professional and Technical and Managers, Directors and Senior Officials.

  • The Sectors section of this report notes that 31% of Business, Administration and Law graduates worked in the Financial, Insurance and Real Estate sector.

Graduates of Education tend to work in Professional Occupations more than any other occupation type, and the Sectors tab of this report notes that 89% of Education graduates worked in the Education sector.

Graduates of Engineering, Manufacturing and Construction programmes worked largely in Professional Occupations, followed by Associate Professional and Technical Occupations and Skilled Trades Occupations.

  • The Sectors section of this report notes that 28% of Engineering, Manufacturing and Construction graduates worked in the Industry sector, followed by 23% in the Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities sector and 22% in the Construction sector.

Graduates of Health and Welfare programmes worked largely in Professional Occupations, followed by Associate Professional and Technical Occupations and Caring, Leisure and Other Service Occupations.

  • The Sectors section of this report notes that 63% of Health and Welfare graduates worked in the Human Health and Social Work Activities sector.

Graduates of Social Sciences, Journalism and Information, ICT and Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics programmes worked mainly in Professional Occupations, followed by Associate Professional and Technical Occupations.
