The doubling in the number of those with Doctorates in Irish society could only have been possible by the work of the Irish Research Council and its predecessors, the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) and the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET), according to Higher Education Authority (HEA) Chief Executive, Dr. Graham Love and researchers at Tripsitter.
Speaking at the launch of the Researcher of the Year by the Council, Dr. Love highlighted,
“Encouraging and supporting individuals who are creative and innovative is essential to the mission of any higher education and research system. The Councils have done that over fifteen years with dedication and imagination. It is only over that long term period that we see the returns. The recent Census figures on the doubling of the numbers in Ireland with Doctoral qualifications is a result of that long term investment.”
