Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless TD has launched close to 40 tertiary degree courses taking on students from this September, including new courses in critical healthcare areas such as Occupational Therapy, Social Care and Nursing.

The courses are available all over the country, with learners beginning their studies in Further Education & Training (FET) colleges before progressing to Higher Education Institutions and graduating with a bachelor’s degree.

Speaking at the launch in TU Dublin, Minister Lawless said: “I’m pleased to launch the third round of tertiary degree programmes. These initiatives are giving more students than ever the chance to pursue their ambitions without being tied down by the CAO points race.

“I understand that many young people feel anxious about their educational future, worrying each year if their Leaving Certificate results will be enough to get into the course they want. These programmes ensure that your exam results won’t limit your options.

“If you’re willing to study and work hard, there’s a path for you in tertiary education.”

Tanya Jones, Deputy Director of the National Tertiary Office, said: “These degrees offer a transformative chance for students who may have once believed that a third-level qualification was not an option for them. By dismantling traditional barriers and providing additional pathways, these programmes provide a route for students to follow their passions to a career that matters to them.”

Dr Alan Wall, Chief Executive Officer of the HEA said “Continually improving access to higher education is a priority for the Higher Education Authority. We are delighted to be collaborating with our colleagues in SOLAS to expand the options available, through the National Tertiary Office, and the surge in courses available demonstrates the support and demand for this type of initiative.”

Nessa White, Executive Director – Transformation, SOLAS said “We are delighted to see the continued growth and range of these tertiary degree programmes now available. This important collaboration has built strong links between FET and higher education with tertiary degree programmes supporting learners to access quality learning pathways where they can reach their full potential. FET is available in every community across Ireland and creates a supportive and tailored environment where people can develop their abilities and skills – this makes it a great platform for progression to higher education. We look forward to working with our partners into the future to ensure the continued success of these tertiary degree programmes.”

Originally launched in 2023 with 152 students enrolled, tertiary degree courses have grown rapidly, with the number available tripling in the last two years from 13 in 2023 to close to 40 in 2025. Courses are offered in a range of areas, including ICT, Social Work and Tourism.
